BOC Tennis Workdays

Volunteerism has been a tradition at the BOC since its’ inception. For the Tennis Club this has means that on Club Workdays members volunteer their time and labor to help prepare and set-up the courts for the upcoming season, as well as, clean-up and take-down the courts in the Fall.  This tradition continues today, although with a slight modern day adaptation.  Members now pay an extra $25 with their membership dues.  This money will be returned to them at the conclusion of the season if they have worked at least 1 hour in the spring and 1 hour in the fall or 2 hours by arrangement.

 Each year the specific Work Days and times are listed in the Spring BOC newsletter as well as this web page.  Generally the weekends are the middle to late weekends in April and the last weekend in October (and the first weekend of November, if necessary).  The times are generally 9:00am to 12:00 pm in the spring and 10am to 1 pm in the fall.  Of course, all of this may vary according to the weather forecasts near the selected dates but we will try to communicate any last minute changes through this web page.  Members can always call the BOC Tennis Clubhouse (254-8906) to see if work is in progress for that day.

 The necessary work is generally the same each year, although special projects will occasionally make additional labor necessary. Generally the spring work involves a lot of raking and cleaning winter debris, cleaning the Clubhouse and appliances, hanging windscreens, shoveling slate-coat and setting court tapes and nailing, nailing, nailing!  Though the Club has a small inventory of tools, members are requested to bring gloves, rakes, and hammers, and shovels in order to assist in this work.  The fall work also involves a lot of raking of leaves, cleaning the clubhouse, removing nets and windscreens etc., pulling the court tapes, de-nailing them, and rolling them up for storage.  Bring gloves, rakes and warm clothing as it’s generally cold and raw at this time of the year.
